Travelers Rest, SC has come alive in the past 10 years with the advent of the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The reason TR exists in the first place is it was a rest stop on the way to the Blue Ridge Mountains when people would come up during the summers (before Air conditioning) to cool down. Well it seems TR has again become a place for rest, but this time it's for people using the Swamp Rabbit Trail to bike, walk and ride out from downtown Greenville, SC.
The people of Travelers Rest have re-made their home town into a tourist stop with their Trailblazer Park, Gateway bike park, Paris Mountain, Furman University, excellent new shops and restaurants, Swamp Rabbit Trail access, new streetscape and other park improvements. There is a lot packed into such a small area. TR seems to have a corner on cool things to do.
In 2006 the City Council started a "downtown revitalization" plan to create "elements" in TR to attract home buyers and business. These elements included; points of interest, branding concepts, streetscape, Buncombe road park and infill and redevelopment.
They have succeeded in many of these goals. The little town has come alive with new, modern entrepreneurs opening businesses that reflect them. Perhaps Furman University influences the tone of the town, but whatever it is works. The businesses are tasteful, healthy, fun, a little decadent, convenient and unique. Several of the restaurants which started in TR have branched out into other parts of Greenville and South Carolina.
Trailblazer ParkThe park in itself is super cool with an amphitheater, farmers market, concerts, yoga classes and more. The park has panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and hosts the largest farmers market in South Carolina. The Swamp Rabbit Trail has a spur to connect it to the park. The park also features movies, festivals and events. You can even rent it out for events such as weddings and birthdays.
One of the driving forces for change in Travelers Rest, SC has been the Swamp Rabbit Trail. This trail has spurred development all over Greenville County, but no where is it most evident then in TR. While TR has had Paris Mountain and Furman University, the swamp rabbit trail seemed to tap into the outdoor healthy lifestyle folks around here love. The Sunrift outdoor store in TR is a must stop for outdoor enthusiasts on the way up to the Blue Ridge Mountains. It just happens to be on the swamp rabbit trail. The two incidences have caused a happy relationship as people come into the shop to buy and rent bikes and outdoor gear from and for the swamp rabbit trail. Sunrift seems to be an anchor or stopping point for many coming from Furman or even downtown Greenville, SC. Many if not all of the new restaurants are situated before you get to Sunrift.
For those people who love this area new homes are being built and a 20 acre development in the heart of TR has just been approved which will have single-family and apartment homes, retail, and commercial shops.
